DO PenedèsThe 2025 harvest marks a historic milestone for the Penedès Designation of Origin (DO): it will be the first DO in the world to carry out a grape harvest that is entirely organic. This achievement not only strengthens its leadership within the Catalan and Spanish wine sectors but also positions it as an international benchmark for sustainability in viticulture.

A Well-Planned Transformation

The path toward full organic conversion has been years in the making. In 2020, amid a severe mildew outbreak and the global pandemic, the Penedès DO approved an ambitious 2021–2030 Strategic Plan, which included a bold requirement: by 2025, all registered growers must meet organic certification standards. Just four years later, that goal has been reached.

Thanks to coordinated efforts between winegrowers, wineries, and the Regulatory Council, over 2,500 grape growers and 140 wineries have adapted their cultivation methods to eliminate synthetic pesticides and herbicides. The result is a harvest that respects the environment and enhances vineyard health.

A Model with Positive Impact

The benefits of organic farming are numerous: it improves soil fertility, fosters biodiversity, reduces pollution, and helps mitigate climate change. It also has a direct impact on wine quality, producing more authentic wines with greater expression of the terroir.

This collective effort has recently been recognized with the 2025 Environmental Excellence Award, granted by the Ecovino Awards, marking the first time an entire wine region has received such a distinction.

Challenges and Opportunities

Transitioning to an organic model involves challenges: yields may be slightly lower and the process demands more care and labor. However, the Penedès DO is committed to a high-value model, where wines can stand out not only for their quality but for their ethical and environmental commitment.

In parallel, many wineries are implementing renewable energy systems, electric equipment, and regenerative agricultural practices, aiming for an even more sustainable approach. The ultimate goal: to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

An Invitation to Experience Wine Differently

This 100% organic harvest is also a unique opportunity to rediscover the Penedès through wine tourism. During the harvest season, many wineries open their doors to the public, offering immersive experiences — from organic wine tastings to hands-on grape-picking events.

With this bold move, Penedès not only makes history — it proves that tradition, innovation, and sustainability can come together in a single glass of wine.
