The production area of the DO Empordà, located in the northeasternmost part of Catalonia, includes a total of 55 municipalities spread across two regions: 35 municipalities from Alt Empordà and 20 from Baix Empordà, which are geographically separated into two distinct areas.
The Empordà landscape is full of contrasts. To the north, the natural boundaries of the Pyrenees mountains, and to the east, the Mediterranean Sea with the stunning Costa Brava, make Empordà a unique place that blends sea and mountain. An extraordinary territory marked by the presence of the north wind, the tramontana.
Native Varieties with a Rich History
Empordà is the land of cariñena and garnacha, the soul of the local vineyards. Today, these native grape varieties are the most widely planted in the Denomination of Origin, making up two out of every three vines. The percentage of these varieties has been steadily increasing in recent years thanks to the strong commitment of local winemakers, especially to garnacha and cariñena, but also to macabeo, moscatel, and the historic monastrell of the region. Empordà is also a wine-producing area with a unique varietal richness, being one of the few denominations that produces all the existing varieties of cariñena and garnacha.
