The historic hotel, formerly known as Fonda España, reopens after a carefully executed renovation that restores its Modernist heritage while embracing gastronomy, culture and the life of the neighbourhood
Barcelona welcomes back one of its historic hotels. Hotel España, located in the heart of Barcelona just steps from the Gran Teatre del Liceu, has reopened as Hotel España Ocean Drive following an extensive and carefully considered renovation. The property, which first opened its doors in 1859 as Fonda España, is entering a new chapter while preserving the architectural heritage that has made it one of the city’s most distinctive buildings.
For more than 165 years, the hotel has been part of Barcelona’s social and cultural history. At the beginning of the 20th century, architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner transformed parts of the building into remarkable examples of Catalan Modernism. Today, these historic elements once again take centre stage in a concept that combines heritage, contemporary design and new experiences for guests and visitors alike.
A historic hotel in the heart of Barcelona

Hotel España holds a prominent place in the history of Barcelona’s hospitality industry. Located in El Raval, next to La Rambla and just a short walk from the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the hotel has witnessed the transformation of the city for more than a century and a half.
The renovation restores and highlights some of its most significant architectural and artistic features. These include the Modernist spaces designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the monumental sculptural fireplace by Eusebi Arnau, and the historic Saló de les Sirenes (Hall of the Sirens), decorated with the involvement of Ramon Casas.
The project aims to preserve the building’s historic character while adapting it to the needs of today’s travellers.
82 rooms combining heritage and design
The renovated Hotel España features 82 rooms, designed to preserve the character of the historic building while offering guests a contemporary experience.
The interiors combine a sophisticated colour palette with materials such as velvet and references to the spirit of Art Nouveau. Decorative motifs, flowing shapes and elements inspired by Catalan Modernism create a warm and enveloping atmosphere, where the building’s historic architecture meets modern comfort.
The renovation extends beyond the rooms. The redesign of the communal areas aims to open the hotel up to the neighbourhood and create a meeting point for travellers and Barcelona residents.
The library and Sala Arnau are two spaces dedicated to reading and to exploring the history of the building and its neighbourhood. They are complemented by concepts such as Vinyl Corner, a music-focused project, and Dorita Cocktail Bar & Club, designed in collaboration with the La Confitería group.
Fonda España: Catalan gastronomy by Martín Berasategui
Gastronomy also plays a central role in the new chapter of Hotel España. Fonda España pays tribute to the traditional Catalan fondas through a gastronomic concept created by renowned chef Martín Berasategui, who has been awarded 12 Michelin stars throughout his career.
The culinary offering combines respect for tradition with a contemporary approach, placing local produce and the flavours of the region at its heart.
At the helm of the kitchen is chef Edu Rodas, who leads a team committed to technical excellence, flavour and respect for local produce.
Sky Bar Barcelona: a rooftop terrace, pool and views over Ciutat Vella
Another highlight of the renovated hotel is Sky Bar Barcelona, located on the top floor of the property. The rooftop terrace features a swimming pool and offers privileged views over Ciutat Vella, in a contemporary and elegant setting.
During the summer season, Sky Bar expands its offering with a programme of live music and DJ sessions. DJs perform every Friday and Saturday, while Thursdays are dedicated to live music.
The terrace thus becomes a new meeting point for enjoying Barcelona from above, both for hotel guests and for those looking for a leisure destination in the heart of the city.
Hotel España Ocean Drive: heritage meets contemporary Barcelona
With Hotel España joining the OD Hotels portfolio, the historic property is entering a new chapter based on a concept of hospitality that goes beyond accommodation.
The aim is to turn the hotel into a gateway to Barcelona and a space connected to its surroundings. Architecture, design, gastronomy, music, culture and neighbourhood life come together as part of a single experience.
More than 165 years after opening its doors as Fonda España, the building is once again welcoming guests with its sights set on the future, while keeping alive the legacy of one of Barcelona’s most distinctive historic hotels.
